Recently, however, it has been found that concussions can have serious effects that last a lifetime.
（しかし最近、脳震盪は生涯続く深刻な影響を与える可能性があることが判明しました。）

lastは「最後の」の他にも、「続く」という動詞としての使い方があります。定期試験や入試問題としてよく出題されます。

類似の表現にcontinueがあります。lastが時間的な継続を強調するのに対して、continueは時間はあまり関係なく、単に続いていることだけを述べたい場合に用いられます。
