A paper from the Naples Zoological Station, written in 1959, talks about trying to teach three octopuses to pull a lever down for food.
（1959年に書かれたナポリ動物園の論文には、3匹のタコにレバーを下げて餌を得る方法を教えようとしたことが書かれている。）

「pull down」「引き下げる」という意味です。

例えば、カーテンを上から下に引っ張る場合や、コンピューターやスマートフォンでウェブページを見ているとき、上から下にスクロールするときにも用いられます。
